This is the back view of the Adam and Eve Inn, Adswood, birthplace of one of the most famous zoos in Europe, for it was here that Mr. John Jennison, founder of Belle Vue, started his collection of birds and animals. The inn stood near to the railway line close to the locally-famed "Monkey Bridge", which, it is thought, got its name because of its proximity to the "zoo". This photograph was taken in 1916, and at that time an inscription on a cellar door read, "John Jennison, wine and beer merchant". The inn was demolished many years ago. Mr. Jennison moved from Adswood to the Palm Court Hotel in 1836.
