Norbury Colliery on Buxton Road (opposite the Robin Hood pub) on High Lane. Now used as accommodation. This building was erected c1840 to house a beam pumping engine to drain the workings down to c900ft below ground. The beam would have protruded through the arched opening on the second floor and the pump rods would have then descended the shaft which was situated immediately in front of the building. The water was discharged into the Norbury Brook through a tunnel under the adjacent railway. Coal winding was undertaken at a separate shaft on the other side of Norbury Hollow Road. The clock tower was originally the coal mine's winding house, with the old offices once occupying the cottage on the right.
