The old Police Station on the corner of Commercial Road dates back to 1853. The police relocated to new premises on Buxton Road late 1970s. Next to the station was the Citizen's Advice Bureau which later relocated to Hatherlow Lane (behind the Civic Hall) when the site was demolished in 1985. Behind the station (on Short Street was the Weight's and Measures (Customs) Office.
