London Road - Hazel Grove

1905:c.1905
Archives
The Red Lion c.1905 dates back to 1754 and was one of the earliest pubs in the Grove. It was rebuilt in 1820 as London Road was widened, and had stables and a superb bowling green at the back. Sadly, the pub went out of favour in the 1980s, had a refit, new name ("The Bee's Knees") and installed plenty of arcade machines to attract the younger drinkers. All failed. A brief change back to the Red Lion, the pub was suddenly demolished overnight in 1992 to make way for the proposed new Tesco supermarket. The plans fell through due to local protests, and the site is now a car wash with McDonald's burger restaurant next to it. Progress, eh?
