Photo of the Mechanics Institute building on London Road. The Institute was started by Mr. Brookes, headmaster of Norbury School, in 1868 in a shop for the benefit of local mechanics and apprentices. Voluntary teachers took evening lessons. The building is now the Civic Hall.Next to it was the Primitive Methodist Church (demolished 1960s). The lady holding her baby is Mrs Maddocks.
