In those buildings now known as the Thatched House Tavern, in Churchgate, built in the reign of King James the First, Mr. James Briscall, Surgeon, carried on some of his benevolent efforts to relieve the sick poor. This resulted in the erection first of a dispensary, and afterwards of the noble infirmary in Wellington Road.
