The war-workers

Delafield, E. M., 1890-19432017
Large Print
England, 1917: The Midland Supply Depot distributes medical materials to hospitals, Belgian refugees to comfortable billets, and tea and sandwiches to troop-trains - in addition to a thousand other things. Charmian Vivian runs the depot with a rod of iron, both resented and admired by her underlings, and worshipped by her devoted secretary Miss Delmege. But when new clerk Grace Jones arrives, it sets the cat among the pigeons. For Grace is unimpressed by her director's posturing and claims of indispensability. Then Charmian is struck down by influenza, rendering her Unfit For Duty, and leaving the depot in Grace's capable hands.
