This dissertation examines aspects of the public health question in Stockport, one of the Country's rapidly growing industrial towns.Chaper I outlines some of the environmental and health problems faced by the inhabitants of Stockport.Chapter II examines the local bodies that can be considered to be responsible for dealing with public health problems.Chaper III considers the town's response to the nineteenth century's most dramatic health problem cholera.Chapter IV survey's the provision of health care for individuals.Chapter V outlines conclusions that can be drawn from the study, particularly the inhibitory effect of the voluntary measures on the development of an adequate public response.
