Photograph appeared in "Stockport Advertiser" November 9th, 1967, with the following information: "Founded by a knight renowned for his prowess in the military field, but who later became religiously inclined after the death of his wife, St. Mary's Church, at Disley, has stood there since the middle of the 16th century as a parish church. The building was first erected as a chantry chapel by Sir Piers (or Peter) Legh as a memorial to his wife, Lady Ellen, in 1495. In 1558, on the petition of his grandson, along with the residents of the district, it was dedicated as Disley Parish Church. This was at a time when people had to travel to Stockport for the sacraments of the church, which meant either walking or a horse ride. A feature of the church's architectural interest is its squat square tower in Gothic style, and in times past its windows were filled with stained glass showing the colours and symbols of the 15th century." Picture shows church with graveyard, gates and boundary wall.
