Hazel Grove Mill - Hazel Grove

The Hazel Grove Mill at the north end of the village towards Stepping Hill. It was a silk mill in 1850, but by 1870 Lawrence Ardern had extended it to manufacture sewing and crotchet cotton. He joined the newly formed English Sewing Cotton Company in 1898 and in 1904 the mill became a box-making and printing works. One of the labels they printed was for Dewhurst's Sylko. The public weighbridge was beside the mill and behind was a reservoir. The mill was demolished in 1955. Various companies moved onto the site - notably Slumberland Bedding and Lithopak Printworks. But in the late 1990s the whole area was flattened again and is now the home of Sainsbury's Superstore (opened 2002).
