One of the scars left by the Industrial Revolution was the hotch-potch development in Hopes Carr, running between Wellington Street and Waterloo Road, Stockport. This view, taken about 1910, is looking west from Lavender's Brow. The high buildings near the chimneys on the left are the east end of Stockport Sunday School and the former Stockport Lads' Club. Ephraim Hallam, the local philanthropist, spent his childhood at 5 Canal Street, and was probably born there. His father was a cotton spinner in Hopes Carr.
