Becoming our customer
Stockport Libraries services are free to all, irrespective of age or where you live. You can obtain a library card from any library in Stockport. There is no minimum age, but those under the age of 18 years require permission from their parents to join. You can join online if you are 13 or older - see below.
Conditions
- To borrow items you must present your library card at our self-service kiosks.
- All items may be borrowed for three weeks.
- You may borrow up to ten books or talking books. These can be borrowed from, and returned to, any branch of Stockport Libraries.
- Items may be renewed at any branch. You can renew items over the telephone (0161 217 6009), please have your library card number on hand. You can also renew your items online via our website. If a reservation has been placed on an item you have on loan, a renewal is not permitted.

- You can also use your library card, along with your 4-digit PIN, to access our free online resources. Visit our website https://www.stockport.gov.uk/online-resources
- Overdue fines are charged for the late return of items. For full details of fines and fees please see our library charges page.
- Library privileges may be suspended if you have overdues items or outstanding charges.
- You can receive an email alert before your library items due date. Ask staff for details
- You can reserve any item available in Stockport Libraries for FREE. If you wish to reserve an item which we do not hold, this service is available for an up-front fee. You can reserve items yourself via our website, over the telephone during opening hours, or by asking the staff at any of our libraries in Stockport.
- All costs incurred by Stockport Libraries due to items lost or damaged whilst in your possession must be reimbursed.
- Overdue notices are a courtesy reminder for your convenience.
- All reservation charges and lost library card charges are non-refundable.
- If you change your name, address or email address, please notify us immediately, by using the telephone during opening hours, via emailing libraries@stockport.gov.uk or by visiting your local library during opening hours, or change your details online by signing in to your account.
- Please report lost cards to the library immediately. You will be held responsible for any items checked out before the loss is reported by using the telephone during opening hours, via email libraries@stockport.gov.uk, or by visiting your local library during opening hours.
Joining online
If you are 13 years old or over, you may join the library online by clicking on the button below after you have read and accepted the conditions. You will then receive an email welcoming you to the Service and inviting you to collect your library card from the most convenient library for you . Under 13s will need to join at a branch library - see our opening hours page
