The demolition of Portwood Chapel, the first Methodist place of worship in that district, it was opened on 10th May 1835 and cost £1,500 to build. In the early days, those who attended were known as 'stickers', for the varnish on the pews was strangely adhesive. Record has it that a youth knelt down to pray with his nose resting on the back of the pew in front, when the prayer was over he was unable to rise without wrenching his nose, leaving the skin from the tip of his nose on the back of the pew!
