General notes:
The Amalgamated Engineering Union was formed on 1 July 1920 with the amalgamation of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers and 9 other Unions. However, its origins go back to 1826 and the formation of the Journeymen Steam Engine, Machine Makes & Millwrights Friendly Society. This developed into the Amalgamated Society of Engineers in 1851.During the 1920’s the AEU opened its membership in an attempt to organise all workers in the engineering industry. The craft tradition of highly decentralised negotiations based on District Committees was continued however. In 1947 the AEU affiliated to the Confederation of Shipbuilding & Engineering Unions. In 1968 with the accession of the Amalgamated Union of Foundry Workers the name of the Union was changed to the Amalgamated Union of Engineering & Foundry Workers. In 1970 after amalgamation with the Draftsmen & Allied Technicians Association & the Constructional Engineering Union the name of the Union changed again to the Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers or AUEW.
