General notes:
Pendlebury Auxiliary Hospital was established at Sir Ralph Pendlebury Orphanage, Lancashire Hill, in September 1914. The Pendlebury Hall Committee offered the use of the dining room at the back of the house for a ward. Among the nurses working at the hospital were Elizabeth Ellen McNaughton and Mabel Daniels. Elizabeth was Mabel’s aunt. When war broke out Elizabeth was 46 years old and Mabel was 24.Mabel Daniels lived at Crown Inn, in Great Moor, Stockport, with her step brother and step sister, father and a servant. Her father, John Daniels was the licensee of the Crown Hotel, and a well-known man in Stockport and Hazel Grove. Elizabeth Ellen McNaughton was John Daniels sister. Mabel Daniels collected signatures of the wounded soldiers at the Hospital in two autograph books. The books contain a collection of poems, illustrations, prints, sketches, cartoons, prayers, jokes, tributes to the staff, self-portraits, and messages. The soldiers writing in the books originate from various countries, Canada, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and Great Britain, however, the author of the first entry in the book is a soldier from Stockport. The entries reveal a mixture of emotions, sadness, humour, patriotism, pride, reminisces, and gratitude towards the staff at the hospital. Comradeship is a strong feeling in most of the signatures, and the desire not to be forgotten is striking. It is evident there was a range of personalities staying at the hospital, and for each of them war stirred up different emotions. Those emotions are reflected very clearly in the autograph books.
