Alex Vernon (right, aged 22) and brother Frank (then 15) stand outside the family premises on 157 London Road. The grocery and flower business was a very popular sight right up to the late 1980s/early 90s before it closed. Alex Vernon died in 1984, aged 88. Frank was the father of the last owner up to the time the shop closed.
