Thomas "Toffee" Burgess owned a market stall selling toffees, hence his nickname, and he served for 30 years as an assistant stoker to the Fire Brigade with an exemplary record. Upon his resignation in 1909, the members of the Watch Committee were asked to honour him by accepting his resignation personally.
