The following entries are taken from their catalogue for these books: Writing-book of "John Hurst, Midsummer 1849. 26 pages of copper-plate writing, 14 lines to a page. (Whatman paper watermarked 1848). 4to. (8x74 in.). Original paper covers. Inscribed by John Hurst on front cover in a fine copper-plate hand. There is a note by his grandson [?] that it was written at Travis's School, Manchester Old Road [Heaton Norris].Writing-book of "John Hurst, Christmas 1849." 28 pages of copper-plate writing, large & small hands: 7 to 14 lines to a page. (Whatman paper, watermarked 1848). 4to. (8x74 in.). Paper covers, with view of Travis's School from the playground printed on back cover. Inscribed by John Hurst in fine copper-plate on front cover.An album of calligraphy by John Hurst, comprising title-page and 12 pages, each with an improving verse & heading written in ornamental capitals & enclosed by flourished designs. (Brook House Academy [Stockport), Midsummer 1850). Oblong 4to. (104 x 14 in.). Original black cloth with all-over embossed floral pattern, green leather spine & corners. In fine condition. An inserted leaf at the beginning contains a long note by John Hurst (b. 1865), son of the writer of this book, on the history of Brook House Academy.[William Travis's School]. Questions of Arithmetic. John Hurst, Brook House Academy, Midsummer, 1851. Finely written MS. on cartridge paper, 2 handsome title-pages & 84 pages of arithmetical problems in an accomplished hand. 4to. (10 x 84 in.). Contemporary binding of patterned blue boards, red leather. A note by John Hurst, son of the writer of this book, explains that Brook House Academy was the boarders' house at Travis's School in Manchester Old Lane.
