Heaton Mersey engine shed. A clue to the purpose of this building is revealed by the hanging door of the pale-grey mineral wagon. This was the shed's coaling stage; the transfer of coal from here into the tender of an engine waiting on the line below was a manual task, requiring physical strength. Note the "water column" beside and at ground level.
