The Marine Engineering Co. (Stockport) Ltd. company was formed in 1938 for the manufacture of Marine Propellers. Soon after, the ‘Mardrive Integral Clutch Motor’ was invented and manufacture on a small scale commenced. This was primarily designed for the driving of industrial sewing machines and on completion, for the Singer Manufacturing Company. This production continued and gained momentum during 1939 until the commencement of WW2. The company continued manufacture the requirements of the Singer Manufacturing Company and other various military contracts. In answer to the invention the high speed sewing machines, the company produced one of the first high speed clutch motor for the efficient driving such machines, therefore, reducing the need to import American high speed clutch motors. As demand for single unit equipment for small industrial machines extended from the clothing trade to many others, The Marine Engineering Company were able to equip such machines with complete Mardrive Equipment. The company operated in all major countries in the world, 30% of the company’s output was exported in 1951. The company continued to grow and in 1977, Mr George Carroll, Joint Managing Director, received the Duke of Edinburgh’s Designer’s Prize certificate from HRH Prince Philip. . He gained this distinction for his invention and design of the Mardrive Lineal Transporter which had already won a Design Council Award. The Mardrive Linear Transporter was considered to be the design with the most potential amongst all 29 design council awards made this year.
